HIRALAL GAEKWAD BIOGRAPHY
Hiralal Gaekwad
Gifted with the ability to seam the new ball and turn the old, Hiralal Gaekwad had the misfortune of having an overlap with Vinoo Mankad (as well as Subhash Gupte and Ghulam Ahmed), and had to be content with a long domestic career.
At domestic level Gaekwad was a major force, taking 374 wickets at 24 and scoring 2,487 runs at 19. Recruited in the Holkar Service at the insistence of CK Nayudu, Gaekwad stayed at the great man’s place till CK’s ‘retirement from service’. He remained a Holkar mainstay during their golden era on either side of 1950.
Gaekwad’s first great performance came in 1946-47, when he single-handedly routed Bengal with 11 for 74. In the 1947-48 final against Bombay, Gaekwad played a stellar role with 37 and match figures of 9 for 109.
Consistent performances earned him a spot for the 1952 tour to England. Despite India’s horror run, Gaekwad did not get a Test despite his 5 for 44 against Essex and 4 for 32 against Glamorgan.
The chance eventually came when Pakistan toured India, and Mankad pulled out of the Lucknow Test. He toiled hard on the coir-matting wicket, and though his 37 overs went for a mere 47, he went wicketless, and was dropped for good.
The Ranji Trophy final next season saw Gaekwad at his perseverant best, when he returned figures of 74.4-30-128-4 against Bengal. Then, with 9 wickets down in the fourth innings, he and Sayajirao Dhanawade batted out 70 minutes to give Holkar what remains their last Ranji title. He continued to play domestic cricket, and even took a hat-trick in 1962-63.
A school inspector by profession, Hiralal Gaekwad passed away at 79. The Madhya Pradesh Under-18 tournament is named after him.
