27 AUG 1998 SACHIN TENDULKAR AND LEGENDARY DON BRADMAN HAS THE AUDIENCE AT LATTER`S 90th BIRTHDAY
When the Little Master met The Don: Bradman's son delighted at Sachin Tendulkar honour
He was the modern-day superstar who Sir Donald Bradman once said played more like him than any other batsman, and the only son of cricket's greatest player says his late father would be proud to have Sachin Tendulkar honoured in his name.
The now-retired Tendulkar arrived in Sydney on Tuesday night for a gala dinner at the SCG on Wednesday saying it was a "huge honour" to be inducted as a Bradman Foundation honoree along with former Australian captain Steve Waugh.
The accolade formalises a bond between the Australian great and the most celebrated player of the modern era that was forged by Bradman's admiration of Tendulkar and then a visit the "Little Master" made to his Adelaide home on his 90th birthday in 1998.
Bradman's son, John, who was present at that meeting, rarely speaks publicly about his famous father, but despite a continuing dispute between the family and the Bradman Foundation, he spoke fondly of Tendulkar and his relationship with "The Don".
"He and Shane Warne both came out for his 90th birthday and I was there as [Bradman's] chief minder," John Bradman told Fairfax Media.
"My mum was dead of course and I used to help him with things. I saw him every day and I was there on the occasion ... it was really delightful. My dad was so impressed with them both. They were such charming and delightful men.

"We sat in his lounge room and chatted. I remember Sachin asked my dad what he did to mentally prepare himself before he went to a Test match and went out to bat. And my dad said, 'Well, I used to go into the office and work and when it was time to play I'd go down to the match, put my pants on and carry on'. Sachin couldn't believe it. You could see the reverence in Sachin's eyes when he spoke to him. It was a lovely occasion."
The Bradman family has a tense history with the organisation staging the annual event on Wednesday night, having previously sued the law firm that managed the intellectual property of his name over the Bradman Foundation's connection to the marketing of Bradman-branded biscuits in India during the last decade.
Disagreement continues over the use of his name, which the family says he had wished, via correspondence, for them to control after his death in 2001.
"We're absolutely delighted with Sachin's recognition but sad that the dispute between the foundation and family remains unresolved," said John Bradman, who changed his surname to Bradsen when he was 32 for privacy reasons, before reclaiming the family name again in 2008.
Now in his mid-70s, he is eager not to let the animosity stop him from conveying the affection his father had for the world record Test run-scorer from Mumbai.
"I'm very happy to speak with great warmth about Sachin despite these other issues," he said. "He remains a wonderful man and a great cricketer, and as he is should be widely admired and respected.
"[Bradman] would be very happy to see Sachin appropriately recognised anywhere.
"He didn't only admire greatly his playing style and his ability, he greatly admired his sportsmanship. My dad placed high value on ability but he placed equal value on sportsmanship. He saw Sachin as well and truly passing those tests. He especially liked Sachin's modesty, it was very important for him."
No stranger to being in the company of a revered figure, John Bradman came face to face with legends of another field at the weekend when he gave the Rolling Stones a guided tour around the "Bradman Collection" on display at the Adelaide Oval, where the veteran rock band opened their Australian tour.
He has been in contact with Tendulkar, who retired after nearly a quarter of a century in international cricket last year, since Bradman's passing, most recently as the 41-year-old was compiling his soon-to-be-released autobiography.
"When Sachin came out on the 90th birthday, he had his picture taken with my dad in front of that painting of him, which was in the lounge room," he said. "And Sachin contacted me recently about using that picture in his book. So we've had an exchange quite recently about that very day. It was such a pleasure to deal with him."
Tendulkar and Waugh are expected to fly by helicopter to Bowral on Thursday to visit the Bradman Museum.
