Dipa Karmakar performed with an exceptional grit in the vaults final but failed to win a medal after finishing fourth

Dipa Karmakar returned empty handed from the Vaults final at the Gymnastics event of Rio 2016 Olympics after she finished the event at fourth position. Karmakar scored 15.066 points in the final.
USA’s Simone Biles won the gold medal with a score of 15.966 while the silver went to Russia’s Maria Paseka after her score of 15.253. Bronze was bagged by Switzerland’s Giulia Steingruber for her score of 15.216.
Karmakar’s final score of 15.066 gave her the fourth position in the final. Her first vault fetched her 14.866 points but her Produnova gave her 15.266. She was second after her two vaults but Russia and USA were the last to go and that pushed Karmakar out of the top three position.

India’s Dipa Karmakar created history on Monday after she became the first Indian to qualify for the apparatus finals of artistic Gymnastics at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Karmakar, who hails from Tripura, finished eighth in the qualification event of the Vaults and scored 14.850 to qualify. She could not repeat her performance in three other events, namely uneven bars, balancing beam and floor exercise. Though Karmakar was sixth before the final round, a strong performance from Canada saw her slip to eight but that was the last position to qualify.
In a total of five subdivisions, the gymnasts tried to qualify by finishing in top eight. After three subdivisions, Karmakar was sixth and her qualification depended on performances from gymnasts from USA, Japan, Canada and Russia.
The finals of the artistic Gymnastics will be held on August 14, Sunday at 2315 hrs IST.
USA’s Simone Biles, the flying American, who said she “didn’t want to die doing Produnova” tallied a monstrous 16.050 to top the qualification.
The subdivision five, which had six gymnasts – Saw Miyakawa (Japan), Marcia Vidiaux (Cuba), Alexa Moreno (Mexico) and Canada’s Brittany Rogers, Elsabeth Black and Shallon Olsen, saw only one qualification.

IT’S seductive to be caught up in the whirl that surrounds Dipa Karmakar and her stupendous journey to become the first Indian to enter the gymnastics finals at the Olympic Games. It’s tantalising to forget the precise moment — a field of eight of the best contemporary women on the vaulting horse, all cut-throat competitors with razor-sharp focus and a greedy need to win that medal — and barter it for the warm, fuzzy story of a girl who was born flat-footed but went on to become a vault sensation.
Dipa’s giant leap isn’t complete, she continues to fly. Gazing at her is better than looking back. India needs to wait for the night of August 14 when Dipa will stromp up the runway, summon raw power to launch herself in the air and stake her claim to gymnastics’ ultimate prize. Dipa wants the country to make the metaphorical journey with her, each thudding step of the way, and like her pet move, fly into the future. It’s not called a double-front somersault for nothing.
Many in India would have made it to office on Monday morning, sleep-deprived and wondering if Dipa had made it to the final. Sunday night, on Twitter, they had cursed the broadcaster for not keeping the cameras on the lone Indian gymnast at the Olympics. Dipa, lying sixth in the standings till three-fifth of the field was done, was pushed by some seriously skilled vaulters who didn’t concede one inch just because she’s India’s first ever to fetch up. From two attempts, one of which was a clean ‘Produnova’, Dipa averaged 14.850. The dawn in India brought with it clarity and good news. Dipa had made it.

Dipa Karmakar (Bengali: দীপা কর্মকার; born 9 August 1993) is an artistic gymnast who represented India at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She is the first Indian female gymnast ever to compete in the Olympics,[1][2] and the first Indian gymnast to do so in 52 years.[3] She attained 4th position in Women's Vault Gymnastics event of Rio Olympics 2016 with an overall score of 15.066.[4]
She first gained attention when she won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow,[5] becoming the first Indian female gymnast to do so in the history of the Games.[6] She is sponsored by the GoSports Foundation.[7]
Karmakar is one of only five women who have successfully landed the Produnova, the most difficult vault currently performed in women's gymnastics.[8] She also won a bronze medal at the Asian Gymnastics Championshipsand finished fifth at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, both firsts for her country.
Dipa Karmakar achieved history in April when she became the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics and the first gymnast of either sex from her country to grace the Games since Tokyo 1964.[9]

Early life and career[edit]

Karmakar,hailing from Agartala in Tripura started practicing gymnastics when she was 6 years old and has been coached by Bisweshwar Nandi since.[10][11]
When she began gymnastics, Karmakar had flat feet, an undesirable physical trait in a gymnast because it affects their performance. Through extensive training, she was able to develop an arch in her foot.[12]
In 2008, she won the Junior Nationals in Jalpaiguri. Since 2007, Karmakar has won 77 medals, including 67 gold, in state, national and international championships.[13] She was part of the Indian gymnastics contingent at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, whereAshish Kumar won India's first-ever Commonwealth Games gymnastics medal.

Senior career[edit]

2011[edit]

In February, Karmakar competed in the 2011 National Games of India, representing Tripura. She won gold medals in the all-around and all four events: floor, vault, balance beam and uneven bars.[14][15]

2014[edit]

In July, at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Karmakar won a bronze medal in the women's vault final, thanks largely to her Produnova vault, which has a difficulty value of 7.00. She received an average two-vault score of 14.366.[16] She was the first Indian woman to win a Commonwealth Games gymnastics medal, and the second Indian overall, after Ashish Kumar.[17]
At the 2014 Asian Games, Karmakar finished fourth in the vault final with a score of 14.200, behind Hong Un-jong, Oksana Chusovitina, and Phan Thị Hà Thanh. After the competition, she said, "See, the two top girls here are the gold and silver medalists in the Olympics, while the third girl was bronze winner at the World Championships. So I'm more than happy that I gave them a good fight and finished fourth here."[18]

2015[edit]

At the Asian Championships, held in Hiroshima from July 31–August 2, Karmakar won the bronze in women's vault while finishing 8th on balance beam.[19]
In October 2015, Karmakar became the first Indian gymnast to qualify for a final stage at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.[20] She scored 14.900 on vault in the qualification round[21] to secure her place for the finals, where she finished 5th with a two-vault average of 14.683.

2016[edit]

On 10 August 2016 at the 2016 Olympic Test Event, Karmakar became the first female gymnast from India to qualify for the final vault event at the Olympics, with a score of 14.833. She narrowly missed out in the bronze medal, finishing 4th in the finals of the event with a score of 15.066 on 14 August 2016 at Gymnastics Center, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where Simone Biles won Gold.[22]
Karmakar is only the fifth woman in gymnastics history to land the Produnova vault, or the handspring double front. The Produnova is an artistic gymnastics vault consisting of a front handspring onto the vaulting horse and two front somersaults off. The vault currently has a 7.0 D-score, and is the hardest vault performed in women's artistic gymnastics. In the Olympics women's vault gymnastics final she finished at 4th position.[23]
