SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI: Kashmir on Tuesday saw sporadic violence which left one person dead, raising the death toll to 25. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting to review the situation in the state and appealed for calm.

One person was killed in firing by security forces on a mob in Kupwara district of Kashmir, police sources said.

There were some other incidents of violence, including a militant strike on a police post and a mob attack on the family of a police officer in which his wife and daughter were injured.

Unidentified militants targeted a police post in Sopore, about 55 kms from Srinagar, firing seven to eight rounds but no one was injured.

In another incident, unidentified persons hurled a petrol bomb towards security forces posted on law and order duty in Noorbagh area of Srinagar, an official said, adding nobody was injured in this too.

The wife and daughter of a police officer were today beaten up by a mob protesting the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani in Awantipora area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district.

"A mob attacked the house of Sub Inspector Mohammad Ashraf Pal at Chandrigam and beat up his wife and daughter. Both were injured in the attack," a police official said.

The injured duo were shifted to Sub District Hospital Awantipora where their condition is stated to be stable.

Pal, who is posted as duty officer at Sangam police post in Bibjehara area of Anantnag district, was not at home at the time of the attack.

The mob ransacked Pal's house, causing extensive damage to the building, the official said.

In Delhi, PM Modi held a high-level meeting to review the Kashmir situation soon after his return from his five-day Africa visit. It was attended by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

The Prime Minister voiced concern over the situation in the state triggered by the killing of Hizbul militant commander Burhan Wani last Friday.

"He (PM) has appealed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to maintain peace so that the situation can normalise. He (PM) also expressed hope that no innocent person should face any kind of inconvenience or loss," Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh said after the meeting.


Modi said the Centre will provide whatever help is needed by the state government, according to Jitendra Singh.


The Prime Minister also expressed satisfaction over the progress of the Amarnath Yatra.

The Prime Minister was given a detailed presentation of the situation prevailing in the Valley.


"The Prime Minister kept taking updates about the Jammu & Kashmir situation during his visit abroad. The biggest evidence of his concern is that he called this review meeting within hours of returning from the tour and took details," Singh told reporters.

The Handwara episode followed by NIT Srinagar unrest is a beginning to create a 1990 type situation in valley again. Hurriyat hardliner Geelani who wants to ensure that all separatist groups should revolve round him and follow his steps to disturb the situation in Valley again.
Geelani and his people backed by Pakistan and its militant organizations don't want that situation should normalize in Kashmir and peace should return to Kashmir which has already witnessed a lot of bloodshed during the last 26 years of ravage.
Sources said Geelani and his supporters are leaving no opportunity in defaming the Indian army and security forces by provoking the valley people against them.
This is not for the first time separatists have tried such gestures but such episodes have taken place in Valley many times in past during the time of tourist interest in visiting the valley giving a second thought to the tourist whether to visit Kashmir or not and there fore hits the economy of the state.
The situation in 2010 and 2012 was fuelled with the same policy of the separatists.
Political parties like NC too faced same problem during 2010 and 2012 summer and Congress which was the coalition partner of NC during that time instead of taking on terrorists and Separatists, they are unnecessary playing politics over Handwara issue to deceive Mehbooba and her party, sources added.
Sources said this way the opposition is doing no good to itself too as they are only interested in vote politics and to score numbers over its rivals.
Action should be taken against those who harm the interests of all Kashmiris irrespective of their religion caste and colour. The day the mainstream parties realize this reality, the separatists will withdraw their ideas and will hide themselves once for all for peace and prosperity in the Valley.
